A Journey With Small Town Outdoors

First thing first: for those of you who don’t know us, my name is Tyler Ripper and the other Small Town Outdoors owner, the one who established this brand, is Tate Schwab. And to be 100% honest with you, I’ve never wrote a blog before. I don’t really know what I’m doing, and I think Tate will tell you the same. We finally were able to make our website just the other day, and that was a treat in itself, but we’re figuring it out. So when it comes to some of these new technological ventures, we may not know what we’re doing right away.. but we’re learning.

With that being said, here is what I do know. I enjoy reading blogs, and I enjoy writing. I’m an avid follower of Barstool Sports, and whether you like them or not, they have some really talented writers that know how to draw attention. Just from reading their blogs every day I feel like you learn a rhythm and how to write different types of blogs. I’ve read outdoor blogs as well, and from reading those you learn how to tell a story. How you want it perceived, how to make it interesting to other people, and how to get your point across.

Coming from a small town in the sticks of northwest PA, the outdoors is something many people in our community can relate to at one time or another. Whether it be hunting, fishing, hiking, or going to the local attractions in our small town, at some point everyone has their own stories about their outdoor adventures.

With this in mind, Tate created Small Town Outdoors in 2016 with the vision to spread the love of the outdoors with everyone, and give people a platform to share their stories along with ours. Soon after starting the social media pages up, Tate began selling apparel with a logo on it that represents who we are. The fishing hook with the deer antlers attached to it. As you can probably tell, we love hunting and fishing and he made it into a rad looking logo. After starting to spread the brand and gain more followers, it started to get bigger and became a lot to keep up with for one person. Sometimes life gets busy, and some things have to take a back seat for a little while. And that’s what happened with STO, until we rebooted it this year and are making steps for it to be better than ever!

Tate and I have been best friends since 4th grade. We played high school hockey together, and were a strong defensive pairing who were competitive and had the time of our lives playing hockey on a team that was like our second family. Tate is one hell of a fisherman, and has established himself in the Kayak Bass Fishing community. As for me, I dedicate a lot of my time to archery and hope to compete in the IBO Triple Crown next year. We hunt together, we fish together, and hangout when we can with our busy work schedules. And as you can see in the picture below, we goof around a lot too when we should probably be focusing on the hunt at hand..

When Tate started Small Town Outdoors, I was unable to be a lot of help just due to other things I had going on. But now that we both are able to contribute to the STO brand, we’re working together to grow the company and spread the love of the great outdoors.

We’ll be writing these blogs that will share our outdoor experiences, along with small helpful tips along the way that may help you hunting, fishing, etc. You can also expect video productions as well (when we get there, that’s going to be a learning process so it might take a little bit lol). We’re both young and still have a ton of learning to do when it comes to hunting and fishing, but hopefully as we learn, we can spread it among you guys as well. Will we reach the experienced outdoorsman as much as newer outdoorsman or less experienced? Maybe not, but our goal is to provide content for anyone and everyone who loves the outdoors. Once we get comfortable with the website, we have a couple friends that may contribute to the blog as well that will share their experiences and tips along the way.

We have a lot of work to do, but we are dedicated to getting it done. Follow our social media accounts (displayed at the bottom of our website) and be on the lookout for new apparel coming soon where you will be able to buy it all here! Remember, we can’t grow without you guys. Share your outdoors experiences with us, whether it’s hunting, fishing, or you’re taking a hike in the woods and get some beautiful pictures that you want to share. So follow our pages, spread the brand to other people, and let’s enjoy the outdoors together. Find the outdoors within.

  1. Great read for your first ever blog. I love this idea of pursuing what you’re passionate about, especially since it is about being outdoors. Maybe one day I can help contribute!
